Nambi Narayanan

Nambi Narayanan is an Indian scientist and aerospace engineer. He has worked as a senior official at the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) as an in-charge of the cryogenics division. Nambi Narayanan Education:

He did schooling from DVD Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu and completed his B.tech in Mechanical Engineering from Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madhurai. He enrolled in M.tech from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram & also earned a NASA fellowship and entered the Princeton University in 1969. Nambi Narayanan Career:

In the early 1970’s, Nambi Narayanan introduced the Liquid fuel rocket technology while A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s team was working on solid motors. He predicted the need of the liquid-fuelled engines for ISRO’s future civilian space programmes and also earned encouragement from the ISRO chairman Satish Dhawan and his successor U.R. Rao. In the mid of 1970s, he developed liquid propellant motors of 600 Kgs.

In the year 1992, Indian signed an agreement with Russia for transfer of technology to develop cryogenic fuel based engines and that agreement was signed for two engines for Rs 235 Crore. The deal was canceled due to the pressure of US president George H.W. Bush. Later, Indian signed a new agreement with Russia to manufacture four cryogenic engines, alongside two mock-ups for a total of US $9 Million, after floating a global tender without a formal transfer of technology. Earlier, ISRO already made an agreement with Kerala Hitech Industries Limited and also provided the cheapest tender for fabricating engines. But the deal was canceled due to spy scandal surfaced in late 1994.

Nambi Narayanan worked nearly two decades with French assistance and their team developed the Vikas engine which is used by several ISRO rockets,  including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) which took Chandrayaan-1 to the moon in the year 2008. Later, this engine is used in the second stage of PLSV and as the second and the four strap-on stages of GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle).

He was awarded India’s third highest civilian award “Padma Bhushan” in 2019.

In the year 1994, he was accused of selling space secret’s to two foreign agents in exchange for millions and he was jailed for 50 days. But in the year 1996, all the charges against him were dismissed by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation). In 1998, The Supreme Court of India dismissed the case. In the year 2001, the National Human Rights Commission has ordered the Kerala State Government to pay him a compensation of Rs 1 Crore. The Kerala High Court ordered a compensation of Rs 10 Lakhs to Nambi Narayanan based on the appeal from NHRC.

In the year 2018, he got a compensation of Rs 50 Lakhs from Dipak Mishra for the “mental cruelty”.
