Shreya Lenka Career:
Since childhood, Shreya wanted to learn music. Because of her deep voice, she was unable to find a suitable music teacher. So her grandma found her a Hindustani classical music teacher, and she trained twice a week with him. She did, however, learn western singing by watching videos on the internet.
Shreya has been dancing since kindergarten, but she only started taking lessons properly in 2016. She studied Odissi for a year and a half before abandoning it because to the high cost of courses. Madan Mohan Purty, the 2009 BoogieWoogie Hip Hop winner, was her first dance mentor. Following her father’s shift to Jharsuguda, she studied dance at Mendo Barla’s dance class, a renowned choreographer and fitness coach. She is now trained in freestyle, hip-hop, and modern dance disciplines as of 2022.
When one of her friends introduced her to Kpop by showing her the South Korean boyband Exo’s song “Growl” she became interested. Shreya liked it and began searching for more artists like PSY, Rania, BTS, and Blackpink. She started copying their moves and aspired to be an idol herself.
A friend of her advice to apply for online Kpop auditions in 2021. She started auditioning for a variety of Kpop labels and began following many of them on social media.
She dropped out of school after class 10 in 2021 and took a year off from her studies. She worked on her vocals, English diction by listening to English songs, and Korean comprehension throughout the one-year interval. She even auditioned for a number of South Korean entertainment companies. At the same time, she launched Shreya Lenka Dance, a YouTube channel where she released dance videos and song covers.
She came across DR Music’s global tryouts for the fifth member of the Kpop girl group Blackswan and applied. Blackswan is a South Korean girl group that is a rebranding of DR Music’s previous group “Rania” Blackswan debuted in October 2020 with three Rania members, Youngheun, Leia, and Hyeme, and two new members, Judy and Fatou.
D R Music Entertainment (Korea) Director Philip Y J Yoon told PTI, confirmed that both, Sriya Lenka and Gabriela Dalcin, “showed us” positive energy. He was cited as stating, “It was one of the reasons we decided not to separate them.” Youngheun, Fatou, Judy, and Leia are the other members of the group.
