Masaba Gupta was born in 1989 in Mumbai, India, to Indian actress Neena Gupta and West Indies cricketer Viv Richards.   Her parents never married, and she was raised by her mother after the family relocated from New Delhi to Mumbai.

She aspired to be a tennis player since she was eight years old, but she gave up when she was 16. She is passionate about dance and music, and wanted to join Shiamak Davar’s dance group but was discouraged by her mother.

She later enrolled in a music and dance course in London but dropped out because she was lonely and homesick.

Kattran was the name she gave to her first collection. “Wanderess,” her Lakme Fashion Week 2014 collection, was “inspired by novelist Roman Payne’s doe-eyed gipsy girl character, Saskia” in his novel The Wanderess. Gupta is well-known for the creative and artistic names she provides to each collection.

Gupta’s design aesthetic has been described as a mix of contemporary and traditional elements, with modernity gaining precedence. She specializes in ethnic wear for ladies, and her fabrics include silk, chiffon, and cotton, as well as rich embroidery work. She is known for her unique prints, as well as feminine drapes and silhouettes.
