Sudhir Naik Career:
When he led the team to blue riband glory in the 1970-71 season, Naik was a hugely respected figure in Mumbai cricket circles and a Ranji Trophy-winning captain.
Naik’s leadership received praise as Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy that season despite the absence of stars such as Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai, and Ashok Mankad.
He went on a fateful tour of England in 1974, making his debut in the Birmingham Test, where he scored his only half-century in the second innings in a losing cause.
He appeared in 85 first-class games, scoring nearly 4500 runs at an average of 35 plus.
He suffered a lot as the BCCI was a very weak board in the 1970s. When he was wrongfully accused of stealing two pairs of socks from a London department store, he was surrounded by subservient creatures who did not protest.
Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his book ‘Sunny Days’ that Naik should not have pled guilty in front of the magistrate and should have been given a good lawyer to fight the false accusation that had tarnished his reputation.
Later, he became an active coach and had a significant impact on Zaheer Khan’s career by bringing him to play cricket in Mumbai and providing him with the necessary exposure.
He was also the chairman of the Mumbai selection committee and volunteered as a curator at Wankhede Stadium.
