Alia Bhatt has stated that she first realized her desire to act while rehearsing for the school choir in kindergarten. Her first acting role came when she was five years old, in her father’s production Sangharsh (1999), in which she played the younger version of Preity Zinta’s character. She auditioned for a role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Black (2005) when she was nine years old, but she did not get the part.
Bhatt made her debut as the female lead in Karan Johar’s teen film Student of the Year in 2012, alongside newcomers Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan.
