Amritpal Singh bio

Amritpal Singh is a radical Indian Khalistan separatist fugitive, a self-styled Sikh preacher, and the leader of the Punjab-based organization Waris Panjab De. He rose to prominence in September 2022, when he returned from Dubai to India to take over as the organization’s leader following the death of its previous leader, Deep Sidhu, in a car accident. He is currently a wanted fugitive in India.

He is said to have close ties to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence and terror groups and to have received training from both. Amritpal Singh Education:

According to his LinkedIn profile, he has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Punjab. However, according to The Tribune, he only enrolled in a diploma course at Lord Krishna Polytechnic College in Kapurthala in 2009. He soon dropped out, never finishing the course.

Amritpal Singh Career:

Amritpal moved to Dubai in 2012 to manage his family’s transportation business at Sandhu Cargo Transport. Amritpal Singh returned to India on August 20, 2022, leaving behind his family business in Dubai, to take over the leadership of Waris Punjab De.

He travelled to India to support the cause during the 2020-2021 Indian farmers’ protest. He was a Mona Sikh at the time (Sikh without a beard and turban).

Following Deep Sidhu’s untimely death, Waris Panjab De published a letter on March 4, 2022, naming Amritpal Singh as the organization’s leader. On September 29, 2022, Singh returned to Punjab from Dubai, and an official inauguration ceremony was held.

The ‘Waris Punjab de’ organization launched a “Khalsa Vehir” campaign on November 23. He was also in charge of Amrit Sanchar and anti-drug campaigns.

Amritpal openly supports the cause of Khalistan, a separatist movement that seeks a separate homeland/country for Sikhs. He has given several statements in which he openly rallies for Khalistan stating, “Our aim for Khalistan shouldn’t be seen as evil and taboo.

In the past, Singh has stated that Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is his hero. He also dresses and presents himself in the manner of Bhindranwale, who was killed in 1984 during Operation Blue Star.

Sudhir Suri, a Shiv Sena politician, was murdered in November 2022 by Sandeep Singh Sunny, who allegedly had a Waris Punjab De sticker on his vehicle. Amritpal Singh was briefly placed under house arrest as a precautionary measure in anticipation of retaliatory violence against him, despite having no prior connection with Suri or the murder. Singh launched an Amrit Parchaar campaign in Haryana after being released from house arrest.

Amritpal’s supporters vandalized a gurudwara in Biharipura on December 9, 2022, and a gurudwara in Jalandhar on December 13, 2022.

In February 2023, a man reported to an Ajnala police station that he had been kidnapped and beaten by Amritpal Singh’s associates. Amritpal Singh and six of his associates have been charged with a felony.

Following his arrest, Amritpal Singh issued a “ultimatum” to Punjab Police to revoke the case, and when they did not respond, his supporters broke through police barricades.

On March 18, the Punjab Police launched an investigation into Waris Punjab De, arresting over 100 people and detaining several others for questioning.

Amritpal Singh Controversies:

In one of his speeches in October 2022, Amritpal said, “Jesus, who could not save himself, how will he save everyone else?” Members of the Christian community labelled this as hate speech.

In October 2022, the president of Bharatiya Kisan Union Joginder Singh Ugrahan criticised Amritpal Singh saying, “He is just a Class XII pass out and has no experience with issues of farming and Punjab. Worse, he is affiliated with a party that labels Shaheed Bhagat Singh a terrorist.

On 2 October 2022, the president of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray), Punjab youth wing held a press conference and urged the state government to arrest Amritpal for his “seditious activities”.

Amritpal’s Twitter account was suspended in India on October 7 due to his remarks and pro-Khalistani tweets. The Ministry of Home Affairs also directed the Punjab state government to keep a close eye on his activities.

Amritpal’s Instagram account was suspended on February 25, 2023, in addition to his Facebook account. In retaliation, Amritpal supporters clashed with the police, injuring six officers.
