Chetan Sharma Career:

At the age of 17, he made his first-class debut for Punjab and participated in One Day Internationals a year later. He was the first man in ODI history to score a hat-trick. He achieved this feat against New Zealand in the 1987 Reliance World Cup.

In 1984, he made his debut Test appearance against Pakistan in Lahore. Sharma was a key member of India’s 2-0 victory over England in 1986. In the two Tests he played, he took sixteen wickets.

Chetan was regarded as a natural successor to Kapil Dev as an all-rounder. By the early 1990s, his bowling had lost pace and precision, and his strike rate had declined significantly.

In 1989, he delivered the most memorable innings of his career against England in the Nehru Cup. With India facing a 256-run target, he batted at No. 3 and hit 101* in 96 balls. Sharma is also infamous for bowling the last over in the Austral-Asian Cup final at Sharjah in 1986.

Chetan became a cricket commentator after retiring. In 2004, he founded a fast-bowling cricket academy in Panchkula, Haryana, which he closed in 2009. Chetan Sharma is the nephew of Yashpal Sharma, a former Indian cricketer.

Chetan contested for Lok Sabha from Faridabad on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket in 2009. He was elected Chairman of the Indian cricket team’s selection committee in December 2020. He was fired in November 2022, following India’s elimination from the Cricket World Cup.
