Havildar Ishar Singh Career:
Havildar Ishar Singh was born into a poor agricultural family. Since his childhood, he always had a dream to join the arm forces. After the establishment of the 36th Sikhs Regiment in 1887, he was enlisted in it.
In 1897, a group of 21 Soldiers which was supervised by Havildar Ishar Singh was posted at Saragarhi. Later, a group of 10,000 to 12,000 Afghans were attacking on Saragarhi post because it is connected to Fort Lockhart and Gulistan. At that situation, Havildar Ishar Singh and his group members decided to fight instead of surrender.
During this “Battle of Saragarhi”, around 200 Afghans were killed by 21 Sikh Soldiers.
The British Government rose to pay them respect and each of them was awarded by Indian Order of Merit.
As every year on 12 September is celebrated as “Saragarhi Day” as a tribute to 21 Sikh Soldiers.
