J. Mahendran did his schooling from village Ilaiyangudi and completed his Graduation in Economics from Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. During college days, his interest came into acting and also got associated with theatres.

He started his career as a screenwriter for the film “Naam Moovar” in 1966. After the huge success of the film, he got more offers from the same banner and worked in the movies such as “Sabaash Thambi” and “Panakkara Pillai”.
He made his debut as a director in the Rajinikanth starring movie “Mullum Malarum” in 1978.
He has directed around 10 films in his career. He also tried his luck at the acting area and made his acting debut with the Tamil Movie “Kamaraj” in 2004. He has also acted in the super-hit movies like “Seethakaathi”, “Boomerang” and “Nimir”. He was last seen in R. Kannan’s movie “Boomerang” which was released on 8 March 2019.
