Juan Merchan is a Colombian-American judge and former prosecutor currently serving as an acting justice on the New York State Supreme Court. Juan Merchan Career:
Merchan was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to New York City. Merchan started his career as an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in 1994. He worked in both the Trial Division and the Investigations Division of the office, prosecuting financial fraud and other cases. He worked for the New York State Attorney General’s office from 1999 to 2006.
Merchan was appointed to the Family Court of the City of New York, Bronx County, by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2006. He held that position until 2009.
Merchan was appointed as an Acting Justice in the Supreme Court of New York, New York County, Criminal, by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau in 2009, and he has held that position ever since. Merchan previously served as a judge on the New York Court of Claims, a position she was appointed to by Governor David Paterson in 2009 and held until 2018.
Merchan oversaw the Trump Organization’s five-week criminal trial in late 2022.
Merchan presided over the arraignment of former US President Donald Trump on 34 felony charges on April 4, 2023. The grand jury’s indictment of Trump was unsealed the same day. Trump entered a not-guilty plea.
