Kasinadhuni Viswanath was an Indian film director, screenwriter, and actor who was most known for his work in Telugu cinema. He has five National Film Awards, seven state Nandi Awards, 10 Filmfare Awards South, and a Hindi Filmfare Award. In 1981, he received the “Public Prize” at the French Film Festival in Besançon. In 1992, he earned the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award from the state of Andhra Pradesh, as well as the civilian honor Padma Shri, for his contributions to the realm of arts. Viswanath completed his intermediate studies at Guntur Hindu College and his BSc at Andhra Christian College of Andhra University.

He began his career as a sound recordist at Madras’ Vauhini Studios, where his father was a partner. He apprenticed there under the supervision of A Krishnan, the Head of Sound Engineering at Vauhini.
Viswanath debuted as a director with Annapurna Pictures, working with Adurthi Subba Rao and K. Ramnoth. He aspired to be an assistant to filmmaker K. Balachander and Bapu.
He began working as an assistant director in the Telugu-Tamil film Pathala Bhairavi in 1951. Viswanath made his directorial debut in 1965 with the Telugu film Aatma Gowravam, which received the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film of the Year.
Viswanath has directed a number of films that deal with a variety of human and social issues: Saptapadi, Sirivennela, Sutradharulu, Subhalekha, Sruthilayalu, Subha Sankalpam, Aapadbandhavudu, Swayam Krushi, and Swarnakamalam all have lead characters who represent different strata of society and are meticulously etched to fit the larger picture.
Viswanath has also directed Hindi films such as Sargam (1979), Kaamchor (1982), Shubh Kaamna (1983), Jaag Utha Insan (1984), Sur Sangam (1985), Sanjog (1985), Eeshwar (1989), Sangeet (1992), and Dhanwan (1993). Some of these films have been box-office blockbusters.
Viswanath made his acting debut in the Telugu film Subha Sankalpam in 1995.
Viswanath has also appeared in several television serials, including Siva Narayana Teertha on SVBC TV, Chellamay on Sun TV, and Suryiavamsam on Vendhar TV. He also promotes products like GRT Jewellers and appears in television advertisements.
Viswanath worked with Adurthi Subba Rao on National Award-winning films such as Mooga Manasulu (1964) and Doctor Chakravarty (1965).
Viswanath scripted Sudigundalu (1968), and directed works such as Aatma Gowravam (1965), O Seeta Katha (1974), and Jeevana Jyothi (1975), all of which won state Nandi Awards and were screened at the Asian and African Film Festival in Tashkent.
Viswanath’s iconic blockbusters Sankarabharanam (1979) and Sagara Sangamam (1983) were named among the top one hundred Indian films of all time by CNN-IBN. Sankarabharanam and Saptapadi, his directorial works, won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Feature Film on National Integration, respectively.
Swathi Muthyam by Viswanath was India’s official entry to the 59th Academy Awards. Swathi Muthyam, Sagara Sangamam, and Sirivennela premiered at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival. . At the Moscow International Film Festival, Swayamkrushi received a special mention.
