She earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from SBRR Mahajana First Grade College in Mysore and appeared for the Civil Services Examination. After failing the exam on her first attempt, she turned to acting before relocating to Bangalore.

Pavitra began acting in 1994 after being advised by actor Ambareesh. She made her debut in Mister Abhishek, in which he played the lead role. She appeared in Bangarada Kalasha the same year. Pavitra completed her graduation and began working for a human resource consulting firm after not receiving recognition from these films. During this time, T. S. Nagabharana offered her a role in his 1996 film Janumada Jodi.
She portrayed a vamp in the 1997 comedy Ulta Palta. Pavitra was praised for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli’s period drama Naayi Neralu, based on S. L. Bhyrappa’s novel of the same name. She won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a woman caught between tradition and desire.
She was cast as a middle-aged widow in Nagabharana’s television soap Jeevanmukhi, and the role was well received. She was recognised for her performance in the early 2000s soap Guptagamini. She also appeared in Gelathi, Neethi Chakra, Dharitri, Punarjanma, and Eshwari.
