Praveen Sood Education:
He did B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, and earned his Post Graduation in Public Policy and Management from IIM Ahmedabad in 2003.
Praveen Sood Career:
He joined the IPS in 1986 and began his career in 1989 as Asst. Superintendent of Police, Mysore. He worked as a Superintendent of Police in Bellary and Raichur before being assigned as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law, and Order in Bangalore.
In 1999, he accepted a three-year foreign deputation as Police Advisor to the Government of Mauritius. During his time in Mauritius, he was exposed to European and American police.
He took a sabbatical in 2003 to pursue postgraduate studies in public policy and management at the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore and the Maxwell School of Governance at Syracuse University in New York.
From 2004 to 2007, he was the Commissioner of Police in Mysore. He concentrated on transforming Mysore’s chaotic and unregulated traffic situation through public awareness campaigns, mechanical and engineering improvements, and improved enforcement. During his time in Mysore, he was also instrumental in the arrest of terrorists of Pakistani origin.
He was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police for Traffic in Bangalore in February 2008 and served until September 2011. He is a strong supporter of technology-driven traffic management and was instrumental in establishing Bangalore’s most advanced Traffic Management Centre.
His immediate challenge as Additional Director General of the Police Computer Wing was to implement CCTNS, or Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System, throughout Karnataka by networking all Police Stations up to Delhi and ensuring data entry and retrieval of all information in police stations and higher police officers online in real-time. He was instrumental in introducing mobile governance via SMS gateways for fee collection as well as public service requests. He also served as the nodal officer for the provision of services to citizens under the Karnataka Guarantee of Services to Citizens Act.
He was involved in replicating the Bangalore model of technology-driven traffic management to the entire state as Commissioner of Traffic and Road Safety.
During 2013-14, he took over as Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, increasing the company’s turnover from Rs 160 cr to Rs 282 cr in just nine months.
He later served as Principal Secretary in the Home Department, Additional Director General of Police in the Karnataka State Reserve Police, and Additional Director General of Police in Administration.
As Additional Director General of Police, Karnataka State Reserve Police, and Additional Director General of Police, Administration, he was instrumental in instituting large-scale reforms in departmental internal procedures, as well as cutting-edge promotions and welfare.
He was also instrumental in the launch of the “Suraksha” App and the “Pink Hoyasala” managed by all-women cops, which were designed specifically for women and children in distress.
He is currently serving as Director General and Inspector General of Police in Karnataka.
