Sanjay Bhandari Controversy:
Between July 1, 2015, and February 7, 2017, Bhandari reportedly misled the Indian income tax authorities. He allegedly filed two tax returns in which he purposefully concealed information about his international holdings and income. As an Indian resident at the time, he was required to pay tax on all of his global assets and income. Before fleeing, Bhandari was served with a lookout notice in 2016. According to The Times of India, he was also charged under the Official Secrets Act in October 2016 after the Income Tax authorities allegedly discovered classified defense ministry documents at his apartment.
Bhandari has also been accused of wrongdoing in the procurement of Pilatus training aircraft in 2009. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opened an investigation into Bhandari and many officers from the Indian Air Force, the Defence Ministry, and the Swiss-based Pilatus Aircraft, the identities of whom have not been revealed.
