Simranjit Singh Mann won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat against Gurmail Singh of the AAP by a margin of more than 7,000 votes.

In the Punjab by-elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a crushing defeat.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann previously held the position. As a result, the AAP won't have a representative in the lower house of parliament.

Simranjit Singh Mann, 77, is the President of the Shiromani Akali Dal and a former member of parliament . He last won a vote from that location in 1999.

Punjabi artist Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot dead by gangsters last month, supported Simranjit Singh Mann as well.

He dedicated his victory to the people of Sangrur, to late actor-activist Deep Sidhu and Moose Wala, "who gave their blood for the Sikh community".

"This will have repercussions on India's politics. Many used to laugh and say 'what will Simranjit Singh Mann do'. They have been proved wrong today," Simranjit Mann said.
