Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India on Saturday, one day after Justice NV Ramana announced his retirement
He was sworn in by President Droupadi Murmu during a brief ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind, and former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu
As per tradition and seniority rules, Justice Ramana had recommended Justice Lalit as his replacement
After taking the oath of office, Justice Lalit touched the feet of his parents and a former high court judge, Umesh Ranganath Lalit, who is 90 years old, to ask for their blessings
Justice Lalit will serve as the CJI for 74 days before leaving his position on November 8 when he turns 65
The listing of cases before the Constitution Benches and matters that are specifically referred to three-judge benches, according to Justice Lalit, is one of the areas in which he plans to work
Lalit stated that he has always felt that the function of the supreme court is to establish legislation in the most concise and effective manner
