As a child, McDougal studied tap dance and ballet. Prior to teaching and modeling, her childhood dream was to be a ballerina. She attended River Valley High School, where she was a cheerleader, marching band member, color guard member, volleyball and softball player, and a four-year Michigan state champion clarinet player.

McDougal worked as a pre-kindergarten teacher before winning a swimwear competition, which launched her career as a glamour, promotional, and swimsuit model.
