Lester Piggott Career:

Lester Piggott was born in Wantage to a family of jockeys and trainers with roots dating back to the 18th century. The Piggotts were a Cheshire agricultural family that ran the Crown Inn in Nantwich for nearly 30 years starting in the 1870s.

Lester Piggott began racing horses from his father’s stable when he was 10 years old, and won his first race at Haydock Park when he was twelve years old on a horse named The Chase. He was the stable jockey for Noel Murless and then Vincent O’Brien, and he had an illustrious racing career.

Lester Piggott won the Prix de Diane for Andre Fabre with Lypharita, the 2000 Guineas for Michael Stoute atop Shadeed, and the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup and Irish Champion Stakes for Luca Cumani aboard Commanche Run as a freelancer in 1985.

Piggott became a trainer after retiring as a rider at the end of the 1985 flat season. In Newmarket, Suffolk, his Eve Lodge stables housed 97 horses and sent out 34 winners. His burgeoning new career as a trainer ended when he was convicted of tax fraud and jailed.

Piggott returned to riding in 1990, winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Royal Academy just ten days after his return. In the 1992 2000 Guineas, he rode Rodrigo de Triano, another Classic winner. In October 1994, he won his last race in the United Kingdom, and he retired in 1995.

Piggott spent the majority of his career in Suffolk, near Newmarket. He eventually moved to Bursinel, Switzerland, with his partner and family friend Lady Barbara FitzGerald, where he remained for the rest of his life.

Lester’s Derbys was his first book, which he released in 2004.
