Skylar Thompson Career:
Prior to the Draft, Thompson was anticipated to be an undrafted free agent owing to a history of injuries, his age, and a “lack of consistent production as a thrower,” according to NFL.com. Thompson was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the 247th overall pick.
Thompson’s play in the first two games of the 2022 preseason was noteworthy, prompting ProFootballTalk to speculate that his success could compel the Dolphins to keep Thompson on the active squad rather than risk losing him to another team. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel also said that it would be difficult to leave Thompson off of the main roster in light of his good preseason efforts. Thompson had the highest passer rating (138.5) among qualifying quarterbacks at the end of the 2022 preseason. Thompson was named to the 53-man roster following the completion of final cuts.
Thompson made his NFL debut in Week 5 against the New York Jets after Teddy Bridgewater was injured. In the 40-17 loss, he completed 19 of 33 passes for 166 yards and an interception.
On October 15, 2022, Thompson was given the starting quarterback role for the Dolphins in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings. This was due to Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater’s concussions. Despite his debut, he suffered an injury to his thumb after completing 7 of 13 passes for 89 yards and was replaced by Bridgewater, who had cleared the concussion protocol and was serving as the backup quarterback.
Thompson was named the starter against the New York Jets in Week 18 on January 6, 2023, after Tagovailoa entered concussion protocol following Week 16 and Bridgewater sustained a dislocated finger on his throwing hand in Week 17.
Tagovailoa was officially declared out for the Dolphins’ Wild Card game against the Buffalo Bills on January 11, 2023, with coach Mike McDaniel confirming that Thompson will start his third career game. Thompson was named Miami’s starting for the postseason game two days later. Miami started the game as a 14-point underdog and lost 34-31. Thompson completed 40% of his passes for 220 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while Miami’s receivers were blamed for multiple drops.
