Somendra Nath Mitra was an Indian National Congress leader. In 2009, he was a member of the 15th Lok Sabha from the Diamond Harbour Constituency of West Bengal State as a Trinamool Congress candidate. From 1972-2006, he also served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Sealdah
He also appointed as President of the state unit of the INC but due to some problems he left the party in 2008 and formed his new party named “Pragatisheel Indira Congress”.
In 2009, his party officially merged with the All India Trinamool Congress.
In 2014, he again rejoined the Congress party and also became the President of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee on 22 September 2018.
